It seems hard to believe judging from the case numbers and spread of COVID-19 in New South Wales, but Deputy Premier John Barilaro has told ABC News 24 this afternoon that he thinks the statewide lockdown could end by next Saturday.
Mr Barilaro didnât specify which parts of the state he thought could have restrictions eased within seven days, but he referenced how quickly Orange went in and out of lockdown earlier in the year as an example.
Mr Barilaro said he wanted all people in NSW to stay home as much as they could over the next week, but he also noted many regional residents needed to travel distances to access supermarkets and essential services and that remains allowed during lockdown.

âWe know that mobility is something that occurs in regional NSW as we do travel from LGA to LGA and from town to town,â Mr Barilaro said.
âPolice will be out and about, making sure people abide by the rules. Our focus is for people to stay home and to do the right thing.
âAs we showed previously in Orange, we can actually get out of this in seven days and I have no concern that we canât be at this next Saturday.
âThatâs by doing the right thing. Police will be out and about, but itâs not always about using the stick â" itâs about working with our communities and understanding that for some communities this is the first time theyâve probably been in a lockdown scenario.
âSome people might make genuine mistakes, so we will work with them but the message is clear: stay home for the next seven days.â
NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro says schools will be closed for seven days as part of the stateâs snap lockdown.
Mr Barilaro told ABC 24 on Saturday afternoon that the government received new advice at lunchtime that led to the decision to lockdown regional NSW and, effectively, put the whole state into lockdown.
âWe are closing schools for the protection of our children so the schools will be closed for seven days,â Mr Barilaro said.
Regional NSW residents who had weddings or funerals planned for Sunday will be able to have the ceremonies despite the state going into lockdown from 5pm today.
The NSW Health media release on the lockdown confirmed that the events may go ahead until 12.01am on Monday.
Small funerals will be allowed during lockdown but with a maximum of 10 people plus the person conducting the funeral.
âThere will be a one-day âgrace periodâ for planned weddings and funerals in the regional areas that have not already been subject to a lockdown,â the release read.
âThose events may go ahead until 12.01am on Monday 16 August 2021, but only with guests from areas that have not already been subject to a lockdown.
âFrom Monday, small funerals and memorial services of 10 persons only (excluding the persons conducting the service) will be permitted.â
Victorian health authorities say there are very concerned as the state recorded 21 new locally acquired cases and the source of eight infections detected in the latest outbreak remains a mystery.
Health Minister Martin Foley said 11 of the new cases were in quarantine for the entirety of their infectious period and that all the new infections are linked to the current outbreak.
The eight infections that are yet to be linked back to a source include cases in the City of Melbourne, Glenroy, Melton South, Middle Park, Newport, West Brunswick, Wyndham Vale and West Footscray.
