U.K Researchers : Shots targeting Delta Variant may be required

Vaccines targeting the highly transmissible delta variant may now be needed, given its ability to infect people with fading immunity and potentially increased severity, researchers leading a large English study of Covid shots said.

A third wave of English cases has been driven by the delta strain among both unvaccinated people especially those aged 12 to 24 as well as some people who had received Covid shots, according to authors of a study of samples from about 98,000 people in England.

The U.S., U.K. and Israel are among the most fully vaccinated countries in the world, yet all have seen surges in Covid cases and hospitalizations linked to the delta strain. Health officials in the U.S. have said they’re pleading with the hesitant to get immunised to try to control the spread of the virus, which has potential to lead to further, more dangerous mutations.

Despite the losses, current vaccines continue to give a relatively high degree of protection, the researchers from institutions across the U.K. said. Fully immunized people were three times less likely to catch delta than non-immunized peers, and less likely to suffer bouts of symptomatic Covid-19 or to pass the virus on to others if they did get infected, according to the study.

Meanwhile, according to a separate study named ‘Neutralisation of Delta variant with sera of Covishield vaccines and COVID-19 recovered vaccinated individuals’, India-made Covishield may be handy in fighting the Delta variant.

The study demonstrated that the breakthrough cases and the Covid-19 recovered individuals with one or two doses of Covishield vaccine had relatively higher neutralizing responses against the Delta variant in comparison to the participants who were administered either one or two doses of Covishield.

Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin is effective against the Delta and Delta plus variant, a study by the Indian Council of Medical Research and National Institute of Virology has said.

The study released on Monday showed that Covaxin provides 65.2 per cent protection against the Delta variant which was first detected in India. The Delta variant which has spread to 99 countries is a variant of concern and was also responsible for the second wave in India.
