Iraqi PM says he knows whos behind assassination attempt
Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi claims that the government knows who was responsible for the reported drone attack against his residence, and will expose them.
âWe will pursue those who committed yesterdayâs crime. We know them well and we will expose them,â al-Kadhimi said in a statement from his office on Sunday, as cited by Reuters.
The prime minister stopped short of revealing the identities of the alleged perpetrators.
Three drones were reportedly used in an attack on al-Kadhimiâs residence in Baghdadâs Green Zone early Sunday morning local time. Iraqâs Security Media Cell claimed the drones were âbooby-trapped,â and two of the drones were reportedly downed, while one reached the prime ministerâs residence and caused damage, reportedly injuring members of his security details.
Al-Kadhimi was not hurt in the incident, and he released a statement shortly afterwards, calling for âcalm and restraint from everyoneâ for âthe sake of Iraq.â
The reported attack followed Fridayâs chaotic protests in Baghdad. Demonstrators protested Octoberâs parliamentary election results, in which pro-Iranian Shia parties suffered heavy losses, and many alleged voter fraud and called for a recount. Over 100 people were injured as protesters clashed with police and attempted to storm the Green Zone. Several demonstrators were allegedly killed in the unrest. Al-Kadhimi ordered an investigation into the violence.
The US government has offered to help investigate the reported attack on the prime ministerâs residence, and âstrongly condemnedâ the âapparent act of terrorism.â Iran has claimed that âforeign think tanksâ might have orchestrated the attack to destabilize the already fragile situation in the country.
