Octagons Fabric of Bolton to show at Bolton Film Festival
THE town’s rich industrial heritage will take centre stage at Bolton Film Festival, which gets under way this evening.
The Fabric of Bolton will be screened as part of the five-day festival. The short documentary film celebrates the cultural diversity of the town documenting Bolton’s industrial past through the lens of the town’s Black, Asian and ethnic minorities.
Over the past 12 months, the Octagon Theatre’s Creative Engagement department, in partnership with Bolton Solidarity Community Association, spoke to members of the community who worked in textiles and other industries in Bolton from the 1960s to the 1980s.
The first-hand testimonies have now been pieced together to create the short film that explores the working and social lives of Bolton’s millworkers, weaving together the diverse threads that make up the fabric of the town of Bolton.
The film will be screened today at the Light Cinema for an invited audience but members of the public can watch the short film online on October 9, available for 48 hours.
As well as the short film, there will also be a digital exhibition of all the collated oral history interviews as well as a collection of archive photography available to view on the Octagon’s website from tomorrow.

“This project has allowed us to use our resources as a cultural organisation to bring greater visibility to the story of their contribution to Bolton’s shared heritage.
“We are extremely excited to have partnered with Bolton Film Festival to share this untold story of Bolton’s culture from the fresh and less commonly heard perspective of the town’s Black and South Asian textile workers.
“It is a captivating, educational and inspirational look at their journey, as they tell their stories in their own words.â€
